The answer so far

For Australia, first classify the exact product and whether you are a visitor or resident; ordinary personal medicines and controlled substances follow different processes.

Australia’s Therapeutic Goods Administration describes a traveller’s exemption for certain medicines and devices carried for personal use or an accompanying immediate family member, subject to conditions. Check the exact product and the Australian border rules; separate requirements may apply to controlled substances.1

The traveller’s exemption

The TGA’s entering-Australia guidance explains the exemption and its conditions, including keeping medicines in original packaging so border officers can identify them. Read the source for the specific product and traveller. A separate personal importation scheme for products sent from overseas is not the same process as carrying a product while travelling.1

The practical conditions described by Australian authorities

The TGA’s traveller guidance describes a maximum three-month supply under its exemption, for the traveller or an accompanying immediate family member. It says prescription medicines require a prescription or doctor’s letter describing the medicine and quantity, and advises keeping original packaging and dispensing labels where possible. Australian Border Force describes accompanied baggage for arriving air or sea passengers, an English prescription or doctor’s letter, and declaration on arrival. These are conditions of the described pathways, not permission for every substance.1345

Controlled medicines and exceptions

The Office of Drug Control’s 2026 traveller page lists examples of prescribed controlled medicines covered by the exemption, while Australian Border Force also identifies special rules for some hormones and peptides, including athletes and associated staff. The Office lists certain substances as prohibited; the border page describes written permission for some of those same substances. Their wording is not fully reconciled here: check the exact ingredient and circumstances directly with the responsible Australian authority. A September 2026 TGA update also announces changes to traveller evidence requirements, so recheck current instructions before departure.1345

Prescription and controlled medicines

Check whether the substance is subject to additional border controls and what documentation is required. A clinician’s prescription can support identification but does not by itself override an import restriction. The TGA directs travellers to further border and controlled-medicine information; confirm the current requirements for the actual substance.1

Supplements and peptide products

The word supplement or peptide does not determine an item’s status. Product ingredients, presentation and Australian law matter. The TGA guidance is not blanket permission for every unapproved or compounded product; use official links and seek a product-specific determination where the position is unclear.1

What this page does not decide

This article is a starting point for people entering Australia, not a finding on a named product or permission for transit through other countries. Recheck the official guidance and the airport and airline requirements close to departure.12
