Can a supplement or drug improve focus?
This page helps you explore questions about focus and memory. It cannot diagnose concentration problems or rank products for you.
“Focus” can mean feeling alert, paying attention, remembering or feeling less mentally tired. These are different things. Caffeine can affect alertness, but its effects and its impact on sleep vary. Small studies of supplements or experimental compounds do not automatically show a reliable benefit for everyone.12

Name the outcome
A memory test, an attention task, a person’s own rating of alertness and everyday productivity measure different things. Improvement in one does not prove improvement in all of them.12
Healthy volunteers are not every reader
A small study in selected healthy volunteers may not apply to someone who is sleep deprived, takes medicines, has a diagnosed condition or starts with different abilities.12
A practical next question
Sleep, caffeine, food, movement, stress and medicines can all affect concentration. Consider these before assuming a product will solve the problem.12
Caffeine
Caffeine is a familiar stimulant. Its effects depend on the amount, timing and your sensitivity. Read caffeine and alertness.
Creatine and cognition
Research on creatine and thinking asks a different question from research on exercise. Read creatine, memory and brain function.
Lion’s mane
Small studies in people do not establish every laboratory or marketing claim. Read the lion’s mane evidence.
Microdosing evidence
Studies with a placebo comparison can help researchers examine both expectations and drug effects. Read the microdosing evidence.
Semax and Selank
Some people compare these peptides while looking for focus or stress support. Their human studies measured different outcomes and do not establish better everyday concentration. Compare Semax and Selank. Curious about brain-scan claims? See what Semax and Selank imaging actually measured. Anxiety and concentration can overlap, but the studies measured different things: follow the Selank anxiety comparisons.34
